What Is IP Geolocation?
IP geolocation is the mapping of an IP address to a physical location — a country reliably, a region or city with more caution, occasionally a postal area. The mapping comes from databases assembled out of regional address registries, ISP allocation data, network measurements, and user-contributed corrections, offered commercially and refreshed continuously as address blocks change hands. Websites consult these databases on every request for purposes ranging from showing prices in the right currency to deciding whether a login attempt deserves suspicion.
How Accurate It Really Is
Accuracy falls off steeply with precision. Country-level lookups are correct for the overwhelming majority of addresses; city-level results are usable but frequently off by tens of kilometers; anything finer is estimation, not measurement — a truth worth stating plainly because interfaces often present geolocation with unearned confidence. Structural factors set the error floor: mobile carriers route traffic through gateways far from the user, corporate networks exit where the company peers rather than where the employee sits, and address blocks get reallocated faster than every database keeps up. The visitors most worth locating are the ones best equipped to lie.
