What Is Canvas Fingerprinting?

Canvas fingerprinting is a technique that identifies a browser by how it draws. A script instructs the browser's HTML5 canvas element to render text or shapes invisibly, reads the resulting pixels back, and hashes them. Because the output depends on the interplay of graphics hardware, drivers, operating system, font rendering, and browser version, the same instructions produce subtly different pixels on different machines — differences imperceptible to the eye but stable enough to serve as an identifier. No cookie is set and nothing is stored on the device, which is precisely what made the technique attractive to trackers and difficult for users to defend against.

The technique entered public awareness through academic work in 2012 and subsequent crawls that found canvas scripts embedded across large swaths of popular websites.
