What Is a VPN?

A VPN — virtual private network — routes a device's internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a remote server, which then forwards it onward. Two things change from the website's perspective: the traffic arrives from the VPN server's IP address rather than the user's, and everything between the user and the VPN endpoint is encrypted against observation by local networks and providers. Originally a corporate technology for reaching internal systems remotely, the VPN has become a mainstream consumer product marketed for privacy, security on public Wi-Fi, and access to region-locked content — used daily by millions of entirely legitimate visitors.

What a VPN Does and Doesn't Do

The tunnel protects the path, not the destination: the website still sees every action taken on it, and the VPN provider takes the ISP's former position as the party able to observe traffic patterns — shifting trust rather than eliminating it. Treating "VPN detected" as a block signal therefore misfires badly: it punishes a large legitimate population to inconvenience attackers who can switch to residential proxies — infrastructure specifically built to look like home connections — within minutes. VPN detection itself is straightforward for known commercial providers, whose exit ranges are catalogued in IP reputation data; the hard question is never whether a visitor uses a VPN but what, if anything, that fact should change.

The defensible policy weighs the signal without convicting on it. A VPN exit modestly adjusts a session's risk context — origin claims deserve less weight, shared-address effects deserve allowance — while the decisive evidence comes from what tunneling cannot disguise: whether the client environment is coherent and the interaction human.
