What Is an IP Address?
An IP address is the numerical identifier that networks use to route traffic to a device — the return address on every packet a client sends. The reverse failure mode also holds: one person moves between home, mobile, and office addresses in a single day. The IP as a Security Signal
Because the address is always available, defenders lean on it: rate limiting per source, blocklists of abusive addresses, IP reputation databases classifying ranges by history and network type, and geolocation for coarse origin checks.
