What Is a Bot?

Ultimo aggiornamento il 20 luglio 2026

A bot is a software program that performs automated tasks on the internet, typically much faster and at far greater scale than any human could. Bots account for a substantial share of all web traffic. Some are essential to how the web works, such as search engine crawlers, while others are built to abuse websites through spam, fraud, and automated attacks.

Good Bots and Bad Bots

Not every bot is a threat. Good bots perform useful, sanctioned work: search engine crawlers index pages, uptime monitors check availability, and feed fetchers keep aggregators current. They usually identify themselves honestly and respect rules like robots.txt.

Bad bots are operated to extract value at someone else's expense. Common examples include bots that test stolen login credentials, scrape prices and content, hoard limited inventory, submit spam through forms, and create fake accounts in bulk. Unlike good bots, they actively disguise themselves as human visitors to avoid detection.

How Malicious Bots Work

Early bots were simple scripts that sent raw HTTP requests. Modern bots have become far harder to spot. They run real browsers in headless mode, replay human-like mouse movements and typing rhythms, and rotate their network identity through residential proxies so each request appears to come from an ordinary household connection.

Bots rarely operate alone. Operators coordinate thousands of instances in a botnet or rent capacity from commercial bots-as-a-service platforms, allowing attacks to scale from a single machine to a globally distributed campaign within minutes.

Why Bots Are Hard to Detect

Every naive detection signal has a countermeasure. IP blocklists fail against proxy rotation, user-agent checks fail against real browser automation, and simple puzzles are solved by software. Distinguishing a well-built bot from a human requires correlating many weak signals — network reputation, device consistency, browser environment, and interaction behavior — rather than relying on any single check.

How Websites Defend Against Bots

Effective bot defense is layered. Basic hygiene such as robots.txt, web application firewalls, and rate limiting filters out unsophisticated automation. The harder cases call for detection that correlates the signals above on every sensitive action — login, registration, form submission, checkout. Modern verification services such as CaptchaFox run this correlation invisibly in the background and only surface a challenge when a visitor looks suspicious, so protection does not come at the cost of user experience. A deeper introduction is available in our article on bad bots and how to protect against them.
