What Is a Good Bot?

Ultimo aggiornamento il 21 luglio 2026

A good bot is automated software whose visits benefit, or at least respect, the website it crawls: search engine crawlers that make pages findable, uptime and performance monitors, feed fetchers, link-preview generators for messengers and social platforms, and archival crawlers preserving the public web. What separates good bots from bad ones is not automation — both are scripts at scale — but honesty and consent: a good bot declares who it is, respects the site's crawl rules, and paces itself so its visits cost the operator little.

The Etiquette That Defines Them

Good bots follow a recognizable protocol. They announce themselves in the user-agent string, publish documentation of their crawler's behavior, and honor robots.txt — the file in which operators declare what may be crawled and what is off-limits. They keep request rates modest, back off when servers slow down, and fetch efficiently rather than hammering every URL. Established operators go further and make their crawlers verifiable: search providers publish official IP ranges or support reverse-DNS verification, so a site can confirm that a visitor claiming to be a major crawler genuinely is one. This verifiability matters because the claim alone is worthless — a user-agent string is a free-text field anyone can populate.

The Impersonation Problem

That loophole created a whole category of abuse: bad bots masquerading as good ones. Scrapers and vulnerability scanners routinely present themselves as well-known search crawlers, because many sites whitelist those names to protect their search rankings — the fake-crawler trick converts a site's SEO caution into a free pass. The defense is verification rather than trust: check claimed crawler identities against the published IP ranges or DNS records of the alleged operator, and treat a failed check as a strong abuse signal, since legitimate crawlers never need to lie. Traffic analyses regularly find a meaningful share of "search engine" hits failing exactly this test.

Managing Good Bots Without Blocking Them

The operational goal of bot management is selective: welcome verified crawlers, control their cost, and stop impersonators and bad bots — a distinction our article on bad bots and how to protect against them explores in depth. In practice that means crawl rules and sensible sitemaps for the bots you want, verification for the identities they claim, and detection for everything else. Placement does the rest: verification layers such as CaptchaFox protect interactive endpoints — logins, forms, checkouts — where no crawler has legitimate business, so search indexing of public content continues untouched while automation is challenged exactly where it could do harm.
