What Is Bot Traffic?

Ultimo aggiornamento il 20 luglio 2026

Bot traffic is any traffic to a website, app, or API that is generated by automated software rather than by a human visitor. Industry analyses consistently attribute a large share of all internet traffic to bots, and a significant portion of that share to malicious automation. For website operators, unmanaged bot traffic distorts analytics, drives up infrastructure costs, and carries the attacks behind fraud, spam, and account abuse.

Where Bot Traffic Comes From

Bot traffic spans a wide spectrum. On the benign end sit search engine crawlers, monitoring services, and API integrations doing sanctioned work. On the malicious end sit bots performing credential stuffing, content and price scraping, inventory hoarding, form spam, and fake account creation. In between lies gray-area automation such as aggressive scrapers that ignore crawl rules without being outright criminal.

Malicious bot traffic rarely comes from one place. Operators distribute requests across botnets and commercial proxy networks, including residential proxies whose IP addresses belong to real households, precisely so the traffic blends into the pattern of normal visitors.

Why Bot Traffic Is a Problem

Even before any attack succeeds, bot traffic causes damage. Analytics fill with sessions that never convert, which corrupts conversion rates, A/B tests, and marketing attribution. Servers and third-party APIs process requests that produce no business value, which raises costs. Rate limits and inventory counters trip on phantom demand.

When the traffic carries an actual attack, the damage compounds: stolen accounts, tested payment cards, scraped catalogs, and spam-filled databases. Because a single campaign can generate millions of requests, the gap between raw traffic and human traffic can be enormous.

How to Identify Bot Traffic

Obvious indicators include improbable session patterns (hundreds of pages per minute), outdated or inconsistent browser signatures, traffic spikes from unusual networks, and form submissions completed faster than a human could type. Sophisticated bots suppress these indicators, which shifts detection toward correlating many signals: network reputation, browser environment integrity, device consistency, and interaction behavior.

How to Manage Bot Traffic

Managing bot traffic starts with visibility: filtering known crawlers out of analytics, monitoring authentication and form endpoints separately, and watching for the indicators above. On the protection side, rate limiting and firewall rules handle crude automation, while the sensitive endpoints where bot traffic does real damage — logins, registrations, forms, checkouts — benefit from verification that correlates network, device, and behavioral signals per request. Detection services like CaptchaFox perform this check invisibly for legitimate visitors and let operators block or challenge specific traffic with custom rules, which keeps analytics clean without adding friction for real users.
