What Is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) secures a login by requiring two independent proofs of identity from different categories: something the user knows (a password or PIN), something they have (a phone, a hardware key), or something they are (a fingerprint, a face). The point of the second factor is failure independence — a password can leak in a breach a continent away, but the attacker holding it still lacks the phone on the nightstand.
